New skill alert: Olympic sport worthy use of a box cutter

Today was the due date for the big poster i’ve been working on! We had to do a poster on either a social/political cause or on a museum exhibition so I chose to do mine on feminine reproductive rights and relate how women want to protect their rights to birth control & safe abortions to how bees protect their hive. I though that both examples had a similar aggression. The text at the bottom reads “It only makes sense that women should have control over their own bodies. Tell the legislators to buzz off! To join the fight for feminine reproductive rights go to now.org”.

So this is one of my favorite little study spots on campus but I’ve noticed more and more that an amazing amount of students come here to sleep.. And I don’t mean nap, I mean SLEEP. Blankets and all. In fact, there is a fellow on a couch near me who has actually TURNED the couch around to face the wall and has created a little sleeping nook. Oh, college.

As a reward for working my butt off all weekend, I took a trip down to Dolores park with my friend Nitisha from across the hall. I think it is safe to say that I found my “happy place”. I also found my tree soulmate.

Also, I finally got a photo of the beautiful sign up in the graphic design studio. It was hand painted by James Edmondson, the one we took the lettering workshop with!

I thought it was about time that I posted a finished project! This assignment involved cutting up and finding relations between letter forms in order to make an image. I’m very pleased with how it turned out! The bottom photo shows them hanging up in the nave for critiques. It’s an interesting set up because you get to present your work to your classmates and whoever else may be walking by.

Aden came to visit last weekend and insisted on making me a beautiful (and delicious!) breakfast of french toast and seasoned potatoes! We also visited the Asian Art Museum and did some city exploring! Lots of fun!

Today has been a day of homework and home decor! I finally got around to putting up the prints I ordered a while ago and i’d say they make a pretty great addition to the wall!

The past few days have been pretty exciting! The highlight of my week was a lettering workshop with CCA alumni James Edmondson. I’ve always thought that since my handwriting was lesser than chicken scratch I would never experience the magic of beautiful hand-lettering. However I learned at this workshop that handwriting and hand-lettering are not necessarily correlated. There is still hope for me! My chickens (see above) were satisfactory. It’s also been raining quite a bit so I treated myself to soup and a grilled cheese with ham and feta this afternoon which was just too beautiful not to document.

The smell of urine has been imbedded in my soul

That’s something nobody tells you about living in San Francisco and something that you don’t really think about on a casual day trip to the city. Feces everywhere. Feces and pigeons. 80% of this city is literally fecal matter, pigeons, and the fecal matter of said pigeons. I mean, yes, there are many beautiful sights to see here as well, but as you travel to those glorious sights, you best watch your step. Overall, i’m getting used to this place and all it’s quirks but on some days it’s just like “wow, this place is gross”.
